Hassan Chikuta Elected Chairman of Mangochi District Council
Hassan Chikuta, MCP councilor, wins the election to become the new chairman of Mangochi District Council, promising to foster development.
MANGOCHI, MALAWI — In a district full council meeting held on Saturday, July 22, 2023, Hassan Chikuta, councillor for Mangochi Malombe ward, was elected as the new chairman of Mangochi District Council, writes Francis Polinyu Banda.
Chikuta secured victory with 16 out of the 36 ballots cast, while Yusuf Abudulla, councillor for Mangochi North ward, came in second with 13 votes.
Adam M'bwana, councillor for DPP Nlimba ward, emerged as Chikuta's deputy, receiving 13 votes and surpassing Lulan Nyambi, who garnered 10 ballots.
In his acceptance speech, Chikuta expressed gratitude to those who entrusted him with the position, including the members of parliament and his fellow councillors who voted for him.
He pledged to work collaboratively with everyone to ensure the development of the district.
"First, let me thank the people who have entrusted me with this position, starting from the members of parliament and my fellow councillors who voted for me. I assure them that I will work together with everyone to contribute to the development of our district," Chikuta affirmed.
Nine out of the twelve members of parliament for the district, including the second deputy speaker of the National Assembly, Aisha Adams Mambo, were present during the elections.
However, Ishmael Grant, Lilian Patel, and Shadreck Namalomba were unable to attend, sending their apologies as they had prior commitments. The three MPs cast their votes online.
Mangochi district comprises twelve members of parliament and twenty-four councillors in total.
Chikuta will hold the position for the next twelve months until the next election is held.
His primary focus will be rebuilding the relationships between the council Secretariat, members of parliament, and fellow councillors to ensure the smooth execution of development projects in the district.
