MZUZU, Malawi— Mzuzu City Hammers and Mafco FC played to a 1-1 draw in a TNM Super League match at Mzuzu Stadium on Monday, with both teams struggling to impress spectators, writes Victor Musongole.
After a goalless first half, Promise Uzoagba broke the deadlock for Hammers in the 52nd minute, capitalizing on a corner kick by Wongani Lungu.
Mafco equalized late in the game through substitute Mphatso Phillimon, who scored off a rebound from Peter Kasonga's shot that Hammers goalkeeper Fawehinmi Joseph Adeshina failed to control.
Hammers coach Elias Chirambo expressed disappointment with the draw, citing player complacency.
"Our play was not good the entire first half, but after a pep talk, we did well. However, my boys were complacent in the final minutes, hence we conceded," Chirambo said.
Mafco's assistant coach Jimmy Mzunga described the match as tough, attributing their struggles to the pitch condition.
"We struggled especially in the first half due to pitch condition, but getting a point here is not bad. We did all we could," Mzunga said post-match.
Peter Kasonga of Mafco was named player of the match for his exceptional performance.
The result leaves Mzuzu City Hammers in fourth place with 18 points, while Mafco moves up two spots to 11th with 13 points. Both teams have played 11 games in the season so far.
