GRL PWRD Creative Training Program Launched in Malawi
This initiative aims to empower female artists and producers, encourage greater participation of women in Malawi's creative industries, and foster gender equality in the sector.
Lilongwe, Malawi-The Festival Institute, in partnership with Kayesa Creative Centre, Kweza, Kusewera, and Cinefilm Academy, has introduced the GRL PWRD Creative Production Training Program for Girls in Malawi, writes Zonkey Kaziyenda.
This program aims to empower female artists and producers while addressing gender disparity in the music and creative industries.
Angellah Zulanga, the Associate Director for Festival Institute, stated that the training program provides entry-level music and video production training to promote creativity and autonomy among participants.
It is designed to bridge the gender gap in the creative industry, as research commissioned by the Rei Foundation Ltd, Malawi National Commission for UNESCO, and Music Crossroads Malawi revealed that less than 3% of the industry comprises women.
The program includes comprehensive training in sound engineering, music composition, and studio recording techniques. It will run for two weeks and feature practical sessions and mentoring to equip participants with essential behind-the-scenes skills in music and video production.
Participants will receive entry-level music production equipment to develop their ideas into demos, including digital audio workstations (DAWs), microphones, headphones, basic studio setups, and video production tools.
The program's theme, "UNITE," aligns with the global call to action for 16 days of activism against gender-based violence and reflects the importance of uniting efforts to address gender disparities in the creative industry.
This initiative aims to empower female artists and producers, encourage greater participation of women in Malawi's creative industries, and foster gender equality in the sector.
