Government Urged to Promote Open Dialogue and Support Youth Initiatives
Speaking during a recent European Parliamentarian study tour in the country, Senator Poteras emphasised the importance of open discussions among youth regarding SRH.
LILONGWE, Malawi- Romanian Senator Cosmin Poteras has urged the Ministry of Health to empower more youth with knowledge and information on Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) to tackle issues like unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases, writes Moses Nyirenda.
Speaking during a recent European Parliamentarian study tour in the country, Senator Poteras emphasised the importance of open discussions among youth regarding SRH.
Poteras highlighted the challenges young people face when seeking information about contraception methods and SRH, stating, "Young people are open to discussing these issues with their friends rather than some elder people, that is why I am saying that empowering more youth on SRH issues by giving them information to discuss these issues amongst themselves is essential."
The Senator underscored that addressing SRH issues among youth requires comprehensive knowledge and information. He also called upon Non-Governmental Organisations and donors to support government efforts in empower youth on SRH.
"I know the government health system has some financial constraints, making it difficult to allocate funds to youth organisations. However, I urge donors and other organizations to help the youth keep their activities alive. Youth need support and opportunities to grow to create a vibrant engagement on SRH," Senator Poteras stated.
In response to these calls for action, Dr. Samson Mndolo, the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health, expressed the government's commitment to addressing SRH issues in the country.
"The Ministry of Health has a keen interest in addressing issues affecting SRH in our country. We are planning to establish more youth corners across the nation to provide a platform for open discussions and support for young people concerning SRH," Dr. Mndolo affirmed.
Empowering the youth with SRH knowledge and information is seen as a crucial step in promoting responsible sexual behaviour and reducing the incidence of unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases among the youth population.
With the backing of government initiatives and support from NGOs and donors, the hope is to create a more informed and responsible generation when it comes to Sexual Reproductive Health.
