MACHINGA, Malawi - To enhance the quality of education in the country, stakeholders have called on the government to increase funding for the Ministry of Education, writes Peter Ngwenyama.
These appeals came during the official opening of a workshop aimed at refining the primary school review curriculum in Liwonde.
Dr. Rachel Chimbwete Phiri, Principal Secretary for Basic Education, emphasized the Ministry of Education's commitment to promoting quality primary education.
She stressed the importance of providing full government support to the Malawi Institute of Education for the development and implementation of a curriculum aligned with Malawi's 2063 agenda on human capital development.
This approach aims to equip learners with technical skills that align with sustainable development goals and international curriculum standards.
Chimbwete explained that the curriculum review seeks to identify and address existing shortcomings, guiding Malawi towards educational improvement.
She underscored the government's dedication to providing resources to the Malawi Institute of Education to ensure curriculum updates are aligned with the demands of the digital age.
Tionge Saka, the Director responsible for the Department of Research Planning Policy Studies at the Malawi Institute of Education, emphasized that the curriculum review aims to position the country on par with international standards.
He highlighted the importance of producing content beneficial to learners and facilitating collaboration with other nations.
Saka noted that the upcoming curriculum review includes introducing stress management as a crucial component to address issues like youth suicide.
The process also involves engaging various stakeholders to remove unnecessary barriers hindering learning.
Furthermore, plans are underway to reduce the primary learners' school hours and address concerns related to natural disasters that may disrupt the learning process.
The call for increased funding to support these educational initiatives reflects the government's commitment to enhancing the quality of education in Malawi.
