Government to Install Piped Water Schemes in Nsanje to Address Salty Water Challenges
Mia to sink water schemes to address salty water, croc attacks.
NSANJE, MALAWI — Water and Sanitation Minister Abida Sidik Mia has announced plans to sink two piped water schemes in the area of Senior Chief Tengani in Nsanje to address the issue of salty water from boreholes and reduce the risk of crocodile attacks, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
During a political rally at Chigumukire School Ground, Mia responded to concerns raised by Nsanje Central Parliamentarian Kafandikhale Mandevana regarding the high salinity of water from boreholes in the constituency.
The minister assured the gathering that the government will implement the two piped water schemes within two months, with the sites chosen in collaboration with traditional leaders.
Mandevana highlighted the dangers faced by residents who resort to fetching water from the Shire River due to the high salt content in borehole water.
"People run away from the salty water from the boreholes in the villages, opting for water from the river, where they are the victims of crocodile attacks," he explained.
The installation of piped water scheme is expected to provide residents with access to fresh water and mitigate the risk of crocodile attacks associated with obtaining water from the river.
