Government Recognizes Media’s Role in Development,” Says Information Minister Moses Kunkuyu

Mulanje, Malawi— Information Minister Moses Kunkuyu praised the media’s role in the country’s development on Saturday, stating that it has the power to either build or destroy, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Kunkuyu made his remarks at the Annual General Meeting of the Blantyre Press Club (BPC) held at Hapuwani Lodge in Mulanje.
“The media plays a critical role in shaping public opinion and promoting national development,” Kunkuyu said.
“It has the power to either build or destroy, and it is therefore important for the media to use its power responsibly.”
Kunkuyu acknowledged the significant role the Blantyre Press Club has played in the country’s afforestation efforts through tree-planting initiatives.
“As the government, we are very proud of your efforts to plant trees, apart from just writing stories,” he said.
The minister commended the outgoing leadership of the Blantyre Press Club and urged the incoming leadership to continue the club’s mission.
“I would like to commend the outgoing leadership of the Blantyre Press Club for their dedication and hard work,” Kunkuyu said.
“I urge the incoming leadership to continue the club’s mission of promoting responsible and ethical journalism.”
The outgoing president of the Blantyre Press Club, Blessings Kanache, thanked the minister for attending the AGM and noted that the BPC covers all southern region districts.
“We are grateful to the minister for taking the time to attend our AGM,” Kanache said.
“The Blantyre Press Club is committed to promoting responsible and ethical journalism in the southern region of Malawi.”
Kanache also expressed gratitude to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) for providing financial support for the AGM.
“We are also grateful to DoDMA for providing financial support for our AGM,” Kanache said.
“This support will allow us to continue our important work of promoting responsible and ethical journalism.”
The meeting served as a platform for acknowledging the media’s contribution to the country’s development and the specific efforts of the Blantyre Press Club in environmental conservation.
