Government Provides Food Aid to Remote Likoma and Chizumulu Islands

LIKOMA, MALAWI— The government of Malawi has distributed relief maize to support vulnerable households on the Likoma and Chizumulu Islands, writes Mercy Phiri.
A total of 543 households have received 1,629 bags of maize, with each family allocated three bags to meet their food needs for the next three months.
The distribution follows a vulnerability assessment conducted by the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA).
"The government of Malawi has extended support to those in need of food assistance," said Christopher Ashems Songwe, the Member of Parliament for Likoma.
"I urge the people of Likoma not to sell this free maize under any circumstances."
Likoma District Commissioner Abbubarkar Nkhoma expressed gratitude for the government's intervention, noting that food insecurity is a pressing challenge due to the islands' lack of cultivable land.
Beneficiary Symon Mandowa thanked the authorities for the assistance, stating, "This is the first time I have received relief maize. It will greatly help my family, especially now that hunger has already struck our household."
