Government Pledges Timely Completion of K2 Billion Embangweni Solar-Powered Water Project
Mzimba, Malawi — The government has reaffirmed its commitment to completing a K2 billion solar-powered water supply project in the Embangweni area of Mzimba District on time to address chronic water challenges, writes Victoria Yande.
Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development Roza Mbilizi made the pledge on Wednesday, 7 May 2026, during a tour of the project site.
She said the government of President Peter Mutharika is committed to providing safe water because “water is life.”
The project, which abstracts underground water from four boreholes and uses solar power to pump it into tanks before distribution through taps, targets Embangweni and surrounding communities that have long suffered water shortages.
Member of Parliament for Mzimba South, Emmanuel Chambulanyina Jere, welcomed the initiative, saying it will transform lives and end years of reliance on unsafe dams shared with animals.
“In the past, people were suffering to find clean water... this put people’s lives at risk with diseases like cholera. Drinking piped water instead of muddy water will help them,” said Jere.
Over 10,000 people in the area are expected to benefit.
A Form Two student at Embangweni Community Day Secondary School, Wezi Thawi, also appreciated the project, noting it will solve the school’s water supply problems during power outages.
Frank Mwenyechanya, Director Responsible for Construction at FISD Company Limited, confirmed the project is on course for completion by the end of this month.
