Government allocates funds to repatriate Malawians desperate in Oman
The decision comes after reports of dehumanising conditions and abuses suffered by the Malawians trafficked to the Gulf country.
LILONGWE, MALAWI — The Malawian government has set aside K400 million to repatriate fifty Malawians who are in desperate need of returning from Oman, writes Francis Polinyu Banda.
The decision comes after reports of dehumanising conditions and abuses suffered by the Malawians trafficked to the Gulf country.
During a parliamentary session on Tuesday, Minister of Transport Jacob Hara addressed the urgent public interest matter presented by Member of Parliament for Machinga East, Ester Jailos Jolobala.
Jolobala expressed concern about the allocated amount and the possibility that those remaining in Oman might be subjected to further maltreatment.
Responding to the concerns, Minister Hara assured the parliament that the government would prioritise repatriating those who had expressed interest in returning.
He emphasised that the government is committed to assisting those who want to come back.
Minister of Information and Digitization Moses Kunkuyu highlighted that while the government prepares to repatriate the fifty individuals, more Malawians continue to travel to Oman.
Kunkuyu emphasised that the government would only assist those who were identified when the number of Malawians in Oman was less than 150.
Member of Parliament for Nsanje Lalanje, Gladys Ganda, urged the government to fulfil its promise and ensure that the allocated funds translate into the safe return of the individuals.
Additionally, she emphasised the importance of providing evidence and support when repatriated individuals arrive in the country.
The issue of human trafficking affecting Malawians, especially young women and girls, is alarming.
Reports indicate that victims working in Oman have described their living conditions as inhumane, with allegations of rape, excessive workloads, torture, and low pay.
These victims have no access to justice or a safe route back home as their passports have been confiscated.
The government's allocation of funds to repatriate the desperate Malawians in Oman is a crucial step towards addressing this humanitarian crisis.
It signifies the commitment of the government to assist and safeguard its citizens, protecting them from further abuses and providing them with the necessary support to reintegrate into society.
