ACCRA, Ghana - President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of Ghana has emphasized the crucial role of technology, education, and health in driving Africa's transformation, delivering a speech at the 5th anniversary of the Council on Foreign Relations Ghana, writes Winston Mwale.
The President, speaking on the theme "The Limits of the Current Development Co-operation Framework for Africa's Transformation," outlined the need for substantial investment in these sectors to achieve sustainable and inclusive development across the continent.
Technology as a Catalyst for Progress: President Akufo-Addo acknowledged the immense potential of the digital revolution to accelerate development, improve service delivery, and boost Africa's economic competitiveness.
However, he also highlighted the need to address challenges, such as the digital divide, to ensure equitable access to technology's benefits.
He emphasized the importance of investing in digital infrastructure, expanding broadband connectivity, improving access to ICT, and developing digital skills.
This, he argued, is crucial to ensuring that all Africans can participate in the digital economy.
The President also stressed the role of innovation and entrepreneurship, calling for the creation of an environment that fosters startups and promotes the development of new technologies and business models that address local challenges.
Education as a Foundation for Growth: President Akufo-Addo reiterated his administration's commitment to providing access to quality education for all Ghanaians.
He cited the success of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, which has led to record enrollment in secondary education. He also underscored the importance of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) to address skills gaps and improve employability.
"Access to quality education is, in my view, a fundamental right and a driver of development," President Akufo-Addo stated, urging continued investment in educational infrastructure and resources.
