Future Stars Emerge at Mayor's Trophy in Lilongwe
Nancy Tembo, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Member of Parliament for Lilongwe City South West, hailed the Mayor's Trophy during the finals.
LILONGWE, Malawi- Mvama and Chizingwe Primary Schools have emerged the champions of Lilongwe City Mayor's Trophy organized by Lilongwe City Council (LCC) with sponsorship from First Discount House Limited (FDH) Bank, writes Moses Nyirenda.
During the finals of the tournament on Friday at Bingu National Stadium (BNS) in Lilongwe, Mvama Primary School became the champion after beating Khumula Primary School 5-3 on penalties in the football category.
Chizingwe Primary School won the netball category, defeating Kamuzu Barracks Primary School 15-12.
"I really appreciate FDH Bank for coming up with its support of about K15 million just for the Mayor's Trophy," said Lilongwe Mayor Richard Banda after the finals.
Banda said LCC looks forward to organizing more Mayor's Trophy competitions to nurture future talents in football and netball.
He said the council is keen to mobilize more funding from sponsors like FDH bank for bigger and better future Mayor's Trophy events.

"We have seen beautiful football and netball, this is something we need to nurture going forward if we are to have powerful Malawi teams both in netball and football in the future," she said.
Tembo urged the corporate world to support the Mayor's Trophy in all Malawian cities to develop more talent and put Malawi on the international sports map.
The Mayor's Trophy attracted 54 Lilongwe primary schools.
The champion teams each received a trophy and K1 million prize.
