BLANTYRE, Malawi— A crowdfunding initiative for legendary Malawian musician Sir Paul Banda has raised K14,567,950 in just nine days, organizer Stanley Onjezani Kenani announced Wednesday, writes Pemphero Musowa.
Kenani, a prominent social media influencer, launched the fundraiser on July 8 following the death of Banda's brother, musician Lucius Banda, from kidney failure.
Sir Paul is battling similar health issues.
"We need to honour our legends while they live," Kenani said.
"Paul Banda's impact on Malawi's music is nothing short of phenomenal."
Sir Paul requires twice-weekly trips to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre for dialysis treatment.
"The trips plus the general care of his condition needs the money," Kenani explained. The funds will be given to Banda on Thursday.
Kenani highlighted Sir Paul's musical legacy, which dates back to the late 1970s when he formed Alleluya Band.
"His soothing voice used to reach us through MBC in the late 80s and early 90s, when he released albums that swept the country by storm," Kenani said.
Kenani personally contributed K110,000 to the initiative.
