From Homeless to Helping Others, Malawian Runs Transformative Youth Ministry
Now equipped with a master's degree, Banda is paying it forward, turning his struggles into a source of hope and opportunity for Malawi's most vulnerable youth.
LILONGWE, Malawi— Hamilton Banda's personal journey from the streets to a life of service has inspired his mission to provide safe havens and support for vulnerable children in his community, writes Thuso Kaphamtengo.
Orphaned at age 5 and living on the streets of Lilongwe for three years, Banda's experience motivated him to found Life Coaching Ministries in 2022, offering homeless youth a path forward through sports, mentorship, and job training.
"My background inspired me," Banda said.
"I wanted to create a safe place for children."
Located in Mphunzi village, the ministry provides shelter, an after-school programme, and summer camps for over 160 children. It has also constructed a water tank and clinic to address critical community needs.
"I believe that every child deserves a chance to dream and a safe place to grow," Banda stated.
The ministry faces challenges, including misunderstandings about its work, but Banda remains determined to transform lives, having himself overcome homelessness through education and service.
"At the orphanage, I learnt good behaviours and was able to resume my education," Banda recalled of his journey.
Now equipped with a master's degree, Banda is paying it forward, turning his struggles into a source of hope and opportunity for Malawi's most vulnerable youth.
