Nsanje, Malawi - The "Friends of Billah" group, operating in the area of Traditional Authority Mbenje in Nsanje, handed over a communal water point on Friday to address the water challenges faced by three villages, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Justin Lapozo Namphwayo, a spokesperson for the group, explained that they observed the communities in these villages were struggling with water problems. He noted that the villagers were also vulnerable to waterborne diseases such as cholera.
"Our aim is to prevent waterborne diseases, ensuring that people have access to clean and potable water at all times," said the spokesperson.
Senior Group Village Headman Kalenso expressed gratitude to the Friends of Billah for providing access to clean water and relieving the villagers from the necessity of using unprotected water sources.
For a long time, the area had no access to piped water, and people had been using water from swamps in the Shire River, which posed threats to their lives, according to the senior traditional leader.
One local resident, Hadija Seleman, expressed her relief that they would no longer have to walk long distances in search of clean water.
The new water source is conveniently close to the communities, making it much easier for them to access safe and clean water.
"We are committed to taking care of this water source that we have been looking for over the past few years, which has finally become a reality," she promised.
