Malawi hospital employee faces fraud charges for embezzling 10M kwacha, writes Tionge Hara.
MZIMBA, Malawi - An employee at a state hospital in northern Malawi faces fraud charges after being accused of embezzling over K10 million through irregularities in the payroll system, writes Tionge Hara.
According to Mzimba Police Spokesperson, Sub-inspector Peter Botha, 28-year-old Boyd Chipeta, an assistant human resources officer at Mzimba South District Hospital, allegedly created fake salary arrears amounting to nearly K10.9 million for nine health surveillance assistants between November 2022 and May 2023.
Officials discovered the anomalies while processing the May payroll at Mmbelwa District Council.
When confronted, the suspect reportedly confessed.
Chipeta has been charged with theft by a public servant and awaits trial.
It is alleged that Chipeta would deposit the irregular payments into the health workers' accounts before asking them to withdraw the money and give it to him.
Investigations are ongoing, and Chipeta will appear in court once they are complete.
