Former Malawi Presidents Donate to Church Building Project
Banda said supporting religious and community leaders' work benefits the people, so those with means should assist.
MZUZU, Malawi - Former Malawian presidents Joyce Banda and Bakili Muluzi have contributed a combined K1.5 million (US$1,600) toward the construction of new offices for the Mzuzu City Presbytery under the CCAP Synod of Livingstonia, writes Blessings Kaunda.
Banda donated K1 million while Muluzi gave K500,000 at a fundraising event Saturday at St. Andrews Church in Mzuzu for the K250 million project. Banda's husband, Richard, also contributed K500,000.
Addressing the congregation, Banda encouraged the presbytery to involve her in future development activities, saying she's willing to participate or send representatives.
"Please do not forget to consider me for any activities in which you think I can participate," the former president said.
"We give not because we have surplus but because we have a giving heart."
Banda said supporting religious and community leaders' work benefits the people, so those with means should assist.
The presbytery's moderator-elect, Rev. John Mnyenyembe, hailed the backing from Banda, Muluzi and other well-wishers, saying it motivates the 13-congregation presbytery toward its fundraising goal.
"We started our announcements in March but God has done great things," Mnyenyembe said, praising the congregations' financial support.
He said the next fundraising effort will be "envelope contributions" with members giving what they can afford.
Former Synod moderator Douglas Chipofya also attended the event in Mzuzu aimed at raising funds for the new presbytery offices.
