MZIMBA, Malawi - The funeral ceremony for the late former Malawi Finance Minister, Goodall Gondwe, is currently taking place in Mzimba, northern Malawi, write Tionge Hara and Winston Mwale.

The sombre event, held in Enukweni, Mzimba, has seen the attendance of prominent personalities, including former President Peter Mutharika, Vice President Saulos Chilima, and Inkosi Mmbelwa.
The atmosphere is one of deep reflection as Tionge Gondwe, the eldest child of the late Goodall Gondwe, pays tribute to her father in a heartfelt eulogy.
Describing her father as "a pillar of integrity," she expressed profound gratitude for the outpouring of support from the attendees.
Chilima said, "We are gathered here today to mourn the loss of a great man, Goodall Gondwe. He was a man of great knowledge, wisdom, and integrity. He dedicated his life to serving his country, Malawi, and he will be greatly missed.”
Yeremiah Chihana, the Member of Parliament for Enukweni, Mzimba North, eloquently recalled Goodall Gondwe's impactful contributions as a financial advisor during the presidency of Bakili Muluzi.
Chihana also lauded president Lazarus Chakwera's decision to accord Gondwe a state funeral, stating that it aptly honours his legacy.
On his part, DPP’s Kondwani Nankhumwa said, "Goodall Gondwe was a symbol of national unity. Let us all follow in his footsteps and learn from him. I urge all leaders to hold hands to respect his death and promote unity. Let us bury our differences and grudges and start afresh."
Catherine Gotani Hara, the Speaker of the National Assembly of Malawi, said, "Goodall Gondwe was a jovial man, as is evident from the many tributes that have been paid to him on social media. He was always there for everyone, not just the people from his home village or political party. He was truly the property of the Malawi government.
"Gondwe could have chosen to work internationally with his educational background, but he chose to stay in Malawi out of love for his people. He was very dedicated to his work and made significant contributions to the country's economic development. His life will always be celebrated."
The poignant service, led by Reverend William Tembo, the General Secretary of the Synod of Livingstonia, underscores the importance of maintaining a spirit of unity and respect during this period of mourning.
Reverend Tembo reminded all present to refrain from engaging in political activities and to honour the solemnity of the occasion.
The funeral observances continued with the respectful removal of the casket from Gondwe's residence, under guidance from the CCAP Synod of Livingstonia.
