NSANJE, Malawi - Police in Nsanje have detained seven foreign nationals from Burundi and Rwanda who were residing at Nsanje Trading Centre in the district, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
The district police station spokeswoman, Sub-Inspector Agnes Zalakoma, confirmed the development.
The police action is in line with the relocation of refugees and asylum seekers who were residing outside the designated Dzaleka Refugee Camp.
The detainees were apprehended during an operation conducted on the night of May 24th to May 25th, 2023.
The individuals have been identified as Portegene Ngirankobo, aged 37, from Burundi, Marcella Dusabemariya, aged 52, Wamahoro Bernadette, aged 48, Umihide Kalombe, aged 24, Hakizimana Jean, aged 49, Adrieni Nyibizi, aged 36, and Sosthene Ngendahayo, aged 43, all from Rwanda.
Sub-Inspector Zalakoma stated, "The operation is still ongoing in the district."
The seven detainees have been transferred to the Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa.
