Malawi-The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has announced its plan to construct a K500 million stadium in Nsanje, with the financial assistance of the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA), writes Cornelius Lupenga.
FAM President Walter Nyamilandu made the announcement to members of the Nsanje District Council on Friday.
Nyamilandu revealed that the project was in response to the destruction caused by tropical cyclone Idai in 2019, with Malawi being one of the countries severely affected by the disaster.
"Of the two districts in the Shire Valley, Nsanje has been chosen to be assisted with a stadium," said Nyamilandu.
Senior Chief Chimombo expressed his gratitude towards FIFA for the funds provided for the construction of the stadium, but also urged FAM and the Consultant to maintain transparency and accountability in the management of the funds.
"As traditional leaders, we will put our eyes on the ground to see that each and every money meant for the stadium has been accounted for," he said.
Furthermore, the Senior Chief requested FAM to consider recruiting the workforce in the district to benefit the local community.
"Some people have the right qualifications but are dumped," he said.
Majita Football Club Team Manager, Michael Banda, expressed his gratitude towards FAM for providing the community with a stadium, stating that
"We will watch high teams play at the standard stadium,” said Banda.
