Mzuzu, Malawi - Fleetwood Haiya, the President of the Super League of Malawi (Sulom), has officially declared his intention to run for the presidency of the Football Association of Malawi (FAM). The FAM elections are scheduled for December 16 in Mzuzu, writes Victor Musongole.
Haiya made this announcement during a press briefing held on Sunday at the Grand Palace Hotel in Mzuzu.
"I hereby declare my interest in running as a presidential candidate in the upcoming Football Association of Malawi elections to be held on December 16, 2023. My decision to run is driven by a shared vision and commitment to elevate our football to greater heights," said Haiya during the briefing.
He went on to explain that his decision to contest for the FAM presidency came after receiving calls from Malawians who wanted him to serve at FAM with a renewed vision and hope.
"The decision to contest and take on this significant responsibility has not been an easy one. However, after carefully considering all relevant factors, I have accepted the call from affiliates and well-wishing Malawians to serve as their FAM President, with a desire to offer our beloved sport renewed hope, vision, and purpose," Haiya added.
Masiya Nyasulu, the General Secretary of the Northern Region Football Association (NRFA), spoke at the same event and announced that his association has endorsed Haiya's presidency for the upcoming elections.
"As an association, we have met and agreed to support Haiya's presidency. We have seen good leadership in Haiya, and we have nominated him," Nyasulu said.
Haiya's candidacy has received endorsements from various football affiliates, including the National Referees Association and the Beach Soccer Association of Malawi.
Walter Nyamilandu Manda, the incumbent FAM president, has not yet indicated whether he will contest in the upcoming elections, but he has been nominated by the Central Region Football Association.
