Fisherman Drowns in Lake Malawi Amidst Harsh Weather
Timothy Banda drowned in Lake Malawi after his fishing canoe capsized due to heavy Mwera winds and strong waves.
NKHATA BAY, MALAWI — A 24-year-old fisherman tragically drowned in Lake Malawi when his fishing canoe capsized amidst harsh weather conditions on Sunday afternoon, writes Rabecca Kaunda.
According to Kondwani James, the spokesperson for Nkhata Bay Police, the heavy Mwera winds began blowing, resulting in strong waves that caused the canoe to overturn, leading to Timothy Banda's drowning.
Family members were notified and immediately initiated a search, eventually finding Banda in an unconscious state.
The authorities were then notified, and the matter was reported to the Chintheche Police Post.
Police officers quickly responded to the scene and transported Banda's body to Kachere health centre, where his death was confirmed.
An autopsy conducted at the health centre determined that Banda died of suffocation.
In light of this tragic incident, the district police are urging fishermen to refrain from venturing into the lake during harsh weather conditions, as advised by the Department of Meteorological Services.
Timothy Banda hailed from Chivuta Village in Traditional Authority Fukamapiri, located in Nkhata Bay District.
