First Lady Monica Chakwera Calls for Women's Empowerment to Drive National Development

Lilongwe, Malawi- During the Zokonda Amayi Macheza 2023 event held at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe on Sunday, First Lady Madame Monica Chakwera underscored the crucial need for empowering women in all areas to enable them to actively contribute to national development and the objectives of Malawi 2063, writes Judgement Katika.
Zokonda Amayi Macheza is an annual gathering organized by the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) through their Zokonda Amayi program, which encourages women from across the nation to connect and exchange greetings through phone calls or text messages on MBC Radio 1.
Madame Chakwera emphasized that empowered women possess the capacity to engage in various developmental activities that benefit their communities and the entire nation.
She encouraged women to participate in groups like Zokonda Amayi Macheza to share ideas, thus improving their quality of life and contributing to national development.
The First Lady commended MBC for providing a platform that allows women to showcase their talents and enhance their skills by sharing their various ideas and talents.
The Minister of Gender, Community Development, and Social Welfare, Jean Sendeza, expressed her desire to see women forming village saving groups to achieve economic empowerment.
She urged MBC to incorporate initiatives that promote women and address gender-based violence (GBV).
MBC Director General, George Kasakula, assured that the corporation would implement the minister's request and introduce initiatives that empower women to combat GBV.
He also celebrated the growth of Zokonda Amayi Macheza, which has evolved significantly since its inception a decade ago.
