Film Festival in Malawi Spotlights Tobacco Harm Reduction through Storytelling

LILONGWE, Malawi-The Nyasa International Short Film Festival in Malawi is taking a compelling approach, leveraging the power of filmmaking to drive awareness about Tobacco Harm Reduction (THR), writes Howard Mlozi.
Nyasa Short Films has dedicated efforts to enhance the capabilities of over 40 content creators, particularly filmmakers contributing to this year's festival.
Themed "Innovation to Thrive in Tobacco Harm Reduction," the 2023/24 festival aims to use creative storytelling to tackle the issue.
In an interview with Africa Brief, festival director Philmon Kuipa discussed the initiative, including the receipt of entries and upcoming screenings starting at Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa.
"We're excited about the project's progress after training filmmakers and content creators in THR," Kuipa said.
"The response has been overwhelming, with participants showcasing immense creativity."
THR advocates for safer nicotine products as alternatives to cigarettes, potentially saving millions of lives globally, including in Malawi.
Kuipa highlighted its effectiveness, building on prior successes with harm reduction strategies.
He emphasized the media's role in influencing public health through behavioral change.
He stressed the importance of filmmakers and content creators crafting narratives that encourage positive shifts in audience behavior.
"The media plays a vital role in raising awareness about the dangers of smoking, especially among youth," Kuipa said.
"We aim to use similar mediums to promote consciousness about the dangers of smoking."
Kuipa also challenged Hollywood filmmakers to join the global campaign for reduced tobacco harm.
Renowned filmmaker Sir Ian Evans Chisekula praised Nyasa Short Films for this effort, highlighting tobacco's impact on education and young lives.
He emphasized the need for concerted efforts to mitigate its influence on young people, especially schoolchildren.
