LILONGWE, Malawi — In a damning exposé, the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has accused the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) of mismanaging donated resources, rattling the football fraternity, writes Romeo Umali.
Outlined in a document titled “2022 Central Review Action Plan,” FIFA alleges three critical counts against FAM: misuse of football development funds, insufficient donations of footballs to schools, and issuing passports to only 17 instead of 20 participants for the Africa Schools Tournament.

Efforts to reach FAM’s General Secretary Alfred Gunda were unsuccessful. He cited unavailability due to ongoing meetings in a statement.
FAM’s Communications Department counters that no audit queries exist regarding their FIFA Forward programs.
It emphasizes full compliance to governance processes and regulations, touting transparency and accountability.
However, sports analyst Henry Gome remains skeptical about FAM's response, pointing to longstanding allegations of opacity.
Gome insists a forensic audit is imperative, exclaiming, "This is a glaring indication that things are not okay!”
Football administrator Kondi Msungama echoes concerns, lamenting the tarnishing of Malawian football’s reputation.
He advocates stringent auditing to hold responsible parties accountable, warning of fallout on players, coaches and the ecosystem if unresolved.
With FAM’s Elective General Meeting approaching December 16th in Mzuzu, analyst Dan Chemis speculates this controversy may prove fatal for FAM’s president.
