FAM President Urges Fair, Balanced Sports Coverage
The training program aimed to enhance professional football reporting standards across Malawi's media landscape.
LILONGWE, Malawi — Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Fleetwood Haiya called on sports journalists Friday to maintain objectivity and responsibility in their coverage of the sport, writes Victor Musongole.
Speaking at a daylong training session at Bingu National Stadium, Haiya emphasised reporters' duty to cover both achievements and shortcomings in Malawian football.
"You must promote the game, and wherever there are shortfalls, write about it showing objectivity and responsible reporting," Haiya said.
He addressed challenges facing national teams, including limited transportation funding.
While the government is responsible for funding national teams, Haiya said FAM must often work with available resources due to budget constraints.
Grey Phiri, a FAM Media Adhoc Committee member, praised the association's effort to update journalists on modern reporting techniques.
"We had experienced facilitators so that reporters stay updated while following ethics. We hope they will implement what they have learnt," he said.
Capital Radio reporter Christy Gomani said the training would improve coverage quality.
"Things are changing; we need to move with time. At times our work has negatively affected the game unknowingly. They should expect change after the training," Gomani said.
