FAM Bans Mzuzu, Civo Stadiums from Hosting Games, Citing Failure to Meet Requirements
MZUZU, MALAWI — The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has banned Mzuzu Stadium and Civo Stadium from hosting Super League and National Competition games due to their failure to meet requirements, writes Victor Musongole.
The decision comes after an inspection conducted by FAM on July 27, 2023.
In a letter dated August 16, FAM General Secretary Alfred Gunda informed Mzuzu City Council that Mzuzu Stadium does not meet the minimum requirements and is consequently banned from hosting official matches under FAM.
The letter was also copied to the Moyale Barracks and Ekwendeni Hammers football teams.
The ban on Mzuzu Stadium, which has a capacity of 15,000, means that the stadium will no longer be able to host Super League and national competitions.
The association expects Mzuzu City Council to address the shortcomings and request another inspection.
The Mzuzu Stadium manager, a Mr. Mtafya, did not provide an immediate comment regarding the ban.
Moyale Barracks General Secretary Mike Chimwala expressed concern about the ban, stating that it will have a negative impact on the team in terms of costs.
However, Chimwala also acknowledged the positive aspect of the closure, as it means the stadium will be maintained to a good standard.
The team's next home games will be held at Rumphi Stadium.
In addition to Mzuzu Stadium, FAM has also banned Civo Stadium in Lilongwe from hosting games.
