Fake Nurse Nabbed in Mulanje for Impersonation and Theft

MULANJE, Malawi - Police in Mulanje have arrested a 21-year-old man, Chimwemwe Nkhana, for allegedly impersonating a nurse and committing theft in the district, writes Ted Likombola.
According to Sergeant Innocent Moses, the Public Relations Officer for the Mulanje District Police Station, the suspect was found wearing a hospital nurse uniform, acting and working as a nurse, and engaging in theft.
The incident occurred at Kumwamba Village in the Traditional Authority Mabuka area, where the suspect was apprehended by men in uniform.
"It is reported that Nkhana resides at Kumwamba Village and was known to be a nurse since he reported there," said Moses.
On March 20, 2024, the suspect approached a reporter seeking assistance after she was injured in an accident. Nkhana was called to the victim's house to perform his purported duties as a health worker.
"Between the nights of March 20 and 21, 2024, Nkhana went to the house of the reporter and stole maize flour since he noticed it when he was trying to assist the victim," explained Sergeant Moses.
The reporter later confronted the suspect and recovered the stolen maize flour. The matter was then reported to the Chitakale Police Unit, leading to Nkhana's arrest.
Nkhana has been charged with personating a public officer and theft and will appear before the court soon after investigations and finalization of paperwork.
The suspect hails from Mbewa village in the area of Traditional Authority Mabuka in Mulanje district.
Impersonating a public officer and engaging in theft are serious offenses, and the police have taken appropriate action to address the matter.
