Evergreen Musicians Dazzle at Academy Concert
Musicians from Brazil, Mozambique and Norway attending the concert as part of the MOVE project were also in attendance.
LILONGWE, Malawi- Veteran musicians Peter Likhomo and Collen Alli "rolled back the ages and put up splendid performance" during the Music Crossroads Malawi Academy end of year concert in Area 23 Lilongwe on Saturday, according to organizers, writes Alinafe Nyanda.
The annual concert "attracted a sizeable crowd and lived up to the expectations of many patrons," said Ghayighayi Mfune, director of the Music Crossroads Malawi Academy.
Students from the Academy opened the show with hip hop and R&B songs that had "most of the youth on toes," Mfune said.
The students received enthusiastic applause as they exited the stage.
Next up was the "reggae session" featuring artists doing covers of Bob Marley, UB40 and Lucky Dube hits.
"As if putting fire to an already blazing inferno, Collen Alli and Likhomo jumped on the stage and though they were casually dressed there was nothing casual in their performance," Mfune said.
The duo played songs by the late Bright Phiri and Makasu like "Skuna," "Muroyi" and "Reggae Magic." Fans forced them to stay on stage longer than planned.
"We have enjoyed the show and we are highly indebted to Music Crossroads for inviting us to take part in the party. When you invite veteran and upcoming musicians to share the stage they do not only share experience but also expertise and business ideas," Alli said.
Mfune praised the veteran singers for accepting the invitation on short notice: "We cannot talk about Malawi music without mentioning Ali and Likhomo. These guys are evergreen and our students surely are tapping from this rare talent."
Musicians from Brazil, Mozambique and Norway attending the concert as part of the MOVE project were also in attendance.
