Karonga, Malawi - The Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM) has called upon civil society organizations (CSOs) and institutions in Karonga district to prioritize gender mainstreaming in their humanitarian response efforts as a means to promote gender equality, writes Wezzie Mwangonde.
This appeal was made by Dumisani Nungu, the project coordinator for the Timazge Nkhaza project in the district, during a two-day training session for CSOs, institutions, and media practitioners on the importance of gender mainstreaming and gender equality in humanitarian response.
Nungu emphasized the significance of involving relevant stakeholders in project planning to reduce gender-based violence during implementation and humanitarian response.
He stated, "I would like to urge CSOs and institutions to update the tools that help in gender analysis so that gender equality can be achieved."
In response, Edgar Phiri, the vice chairperson of the Karonga district CSOs, commended EAM for organizing the training and recognized its impact on project implementers.
He stated, "Gender should be taken as development; therefore, gender equality will be achieved at all levels."
Ireen Mwenelupembe, the Gender Development Officer for Karonga district, urged women and girls in the region to seize equal opportunities and overcome self-underestimation.
She emphasized, "Women and girls should stop looking down upon themselves, especially when they have been given equal opportunities with men and boys."
The Timazge Nkhaza project, implemented by the Evangelical Association of Malawi, receives funding from Norwegian Church Aid - Danish Church Aid.
It focuses on the areas of Traditional Authority Mwakaboko, Kilupula, and Paramount Chief Kyungu, aiming to address various development challenges and promote gender equality.
The EAM's call for gender mainstreaming in humanitarian response reflects their commitment to advancing gender equality in Karonga district.
By engaging relevant stakeholders and updating gender analysis tools, it is hoped that strides will be made in reducing gender disparities and fostering an inclusive and equitable society.
