EU Funds Nature Seychelles Project for Collaborative Wetlands Management
The new project funding complements the EU's new 2021-2027 bilateral program with Seychelles that Benedikt signed with the Seychellois Foreign Minister.
PORT LOUIS, Mauritius— The European Union is providing €218,000 to fund a new project in Seychelles aimed at boosting cooperation among government, private sector and NGOs for collaborative wetlands management, writes Winston Mwale.
The project, titled "Improving Climate Adaptation and Environmental Governance through Local People and Co-Management in Seychelles," was launched Thursday by Nature Seychelles with the participation of EU Ambassador to Seychelles H.E. Mr Oskar Benedikt.
It will offer opportunities for diverse actors to partner on conserving wetlands, a key part of protecting biodiversity.
The launch coincided with the International Day for Biological Diversity on May 22, whose 2024 theme is "Be part of the Plan."
"The project responds to the clamour for environmental equity, climate justice and the right to a clean environment," said Dr. Nirmal Shah, CEO of Nature Seychelles. It will recognize champions investing in wetlands conservation.
The project aligns with the Global Biodiversity Framework for halting and reversing biodiversity loss. Ambassador Benedikt noted its launch demonstrates the EU's longstanding 50-year partnership with Seychelles in areas like environmental protection.
