Malawi: The Electricity Supply Commission of Malawi (ESCOM) has launched new LED tube bulbs with the goal of reducing the country's load-shedding levels, writes Judgment Katika.

The bulbs are aimed at industrial and commercial customers in order to minimize electricity consumption.

During the energy-efficient lighting LED tube project sensitization meeting in Lilongwe, Wiseman Kabwazi, ESCOM's Senior Manager of Commercial and Customer Service, spoke about the measures put in place to ensure the tubes reach deserving customers.

"As I indicated in my discussion today, we will be visiting the installation for the customers who will buy this bulb to see that it has already been installed," Kabwazi said.

"And another measure is that customers who want to purchase this bulb they have to provide information about their meter number, where they stay because we will also be following up to check where those tubes have gone and we will be monitoring them."

Sunbird plc maintenance manager Patric Kaliu also spoke about the meeting, saying that it has benefited his institution.

"We have been introduced to new technology in terms of lighting that ESCOM has come up with, the energy-efficient tube that the industries will be using to reduce demand," Kaliu said.

Kaliu added that consumption will be positively impacted by the new tubes, which have a low demand in terms of usage, resulting in lower consumption bills for industries.

The energy-efficient lighting tube project will benefit nearly 40,000 customers across 900 companies, including shops, warehouses, and garages.

Representatives from Sunbird Hotel, Limbe Leaf Tobacco Company, Japanese Tobacco International (JTI), and the mango industry were among those in attendance at the sensitization meeting.
