KARONGA, Malawi— The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) emphasized the importance of engagement meetings in bridging the information gap between Karonga communities and the district council, writes Lusekero Mhango.
Obert Mkandawire, CCJP desk officer for Karonga diocese, said Thursday that these meetings create a platform for communities to interact with council officials on issues related to education, health and economic development.
"Many community concerns fail to reach duty bearers due to an existing information gap," Mkandawire said.
He called the recent meeting a success, noting the council officials' responsiveness.
"It was a fruitful interface as the council officials were very responsive to the communities' concerns," he said.
Yamikani Bokosi, director of public works at Karonga District Council, addressed delays in completing the guardian shelter at Iponga Health Centre, attributing them to financial constraints.
Bokosi said the project, stalled since May 2023, relied on District Development Fund (DDF) allocations.
"We are sympathetic with the communities due to the lack of a guardian shelter, which presents a significant challenge for those who travel long distances," he said.
