Empowering Women's Sexual Health: Dapivirine Vaginal Ring Holds Promise in Malawi
SAT Country Director highlights the potential benefits of dapivirine vaginal ring for women's sexual health in Malawi.
MZUZU, MALAWI — Robert Mangwazu Phiri, the SAT Country Director, has underscored the potential effectiveness of the dapivirine vaginal ring in addressing women's sexual health needs in Malawi, writes Tionge Hara.
Speaking at the SAT pavilion during the International Youth Day commemorations on August 18, 2023, Phiri emphasised the significance of this innovative solution, especially in situations where men are hesitant to use protection and women encounter challenges in asserting their sexual health requirements.
While neighbouring nations like Zimbabwe, Zambia, and South Africa have already embraced the ring, Malawi is eagerly awaiting approval from the Ministry of Health.
In an interview, Phiri elaborated on the potential impact of this groundbreaking intervention.
"The dapivirine vaginal ring could prove highly effective and beneficial for women in Malawi," stated Phiri. "It offers an accessible option, priced at $7 USD, for women in need."
The dapivirine vaginal ring stands as a potential game-changer in the battle against HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections, providing women with an additional tool to protect themselves when their partners are unwilling to use condoms.
Its affordability and accessibility make it a promising solution for women in Malawi who confront difficulties in asserting their sexual health needs.
