Elderly in Machinga Need Food, Shelter After Cyclone

Machinga, Malawi-Traditional Authority Nkula of Machinga has issued an urgent appeal for food assistance and shelter for elderly residents affected by Tropical Cyclone Freddy, writes Zonkey Kaziyenda.
The cyclone's aftermath has left many elderly individuals in Group Village Head Kalanje struggling to secure basic necessities, including food, clothing, bedding, soap, and household utensils.
"The elderly people in my area are facing numerous challenges due to the effects of Cyclone Freddy; some are living in dilapidated houses with no food," said Traditional Authority Nkula.
Sister Patricia Mauya, Coordinator of the Catholic Development Commission (CADECIM) in the Zomba Diocese, expressed her shock at the situation, emphasizing the urgent need for humanitarian assistance to support the elderly.
She called on organizations and individuals to respond quickly to the crisis.
Chisiyano Adam, a member of the Kalanje Elderly Group, echoed these sentiments, stating that the elderly have been in dire need of aid since the cyclone struck.
"We need food, shelter, bedding, and clothes as our houses were destroyed," he said, urging the government and charitable individuals to mobilize humanitarian support for the elderly in Machinga.
