RUMPHI, Malawi — In a thrilling Castel Challenge Cup encounter, Ekwendeni United secured their spot in the round of 32 by defeating Karonga United 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a goalless draw in regulation time, writes Victor Musongole.
The game was marked by intense competition as both teams failed to break the deadlock in both halves.
Mwisho Youngson came close to scoring for Ekwendeni United in the 77th minute after being set up by Saulos Moyo, but he was denied by an excellent save from Karonga United's Khwima Kita.
The tempo of the game shifted in the second half, especially after both teams made strategic substitutions.
Karonga United introduced Victor Chirambo, Josiah Duwa, and Sinto Chipola for Elie Kayombo, Davie Tobias, and Nangie Songa.
Despite their dominance, Karonga United struggled to find the finishing touch, and the game ended goalless after full-time.
In the penalty shootout that followed, Ekwendeni United's Isaac Msiska, Dan Siwale, Mathews Mkandawire, and Jeff Zida Munthali successfully converted their penalties.
For Karonga United, Josiah Duwa and Allen Chihana found the back of the net. However, Elias Muyiwanga and Nanison Mbewe missed their spots, sending their shots over the crossbar.

Karonga United's coach, Trevor Kajawa, graciously accepted the defeat and acknowledged that his team missed opportunities, both during the match and in the penalty shootout.

Ekwendeni United's mentor, Lukas Kalinga, admitted that his team struggled in the second half but expressed his delight at the win.
