Education Ministry Acknowledges Successful JCE Exams Despite Unprofessional Teacher Misconduct
Malawi's education ministry praises JCE, but condemns teacher misconduct, writes Tionge Hara.
MZUZU, Malawi-The Ministry of Education has praised this year's Junior Certificate of Examination (JCE) as a successful year with minimal challenges, except for the misconduct of some unprofessional teachers who misused examination fees, writes Tionge Hara.
Deputy Minister of Education Nancy Chaola Mdooko made the remarks during a press briefing held at Mzuzu Government Secondary School on Thursday.
Mdooko expressed her overall satisfaction with the examination process, despite the setback caused by unprofessional behaviour.
Mdooko also took the opportunity to encourage secondary school students to value elective subjects such as clothing and textiles, woodwork, home economics, and French.
She emphasised that these subjects contribute to skill development, crucial for achieving a wealthy and self-reliant industrialised upper-middle-income country and providing access to the global community.
Education Division Manager Jennings Malabanda Kayira supported the minister's remarks, highlighting the issue of unprofessional teachers' misconduct as the only significant challenge.
In the northern region, Hoho Community Day Secondary School was the only school affected, with 11 students experiencing the misappropriation of their examination fees.
This incident involved a total of 68 students nationwide.
Deputy Minister of Education Nancy Chaola Mdooko recently visited Mzuzu Government Secondary School to oversee the administration of the last papers of the JCE examinations.
