EarthCare Group Cleans Up Kamuzu Stadium
Malawi: Young environmentalists clean Kamuzu Stadium on June 17th.
BLANTYRE, Malawi — A group of young environmental enthusiasts in Malawi cleaned up Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on June 17, 2023, Moses Sakala writes.
The group, called EarthCare, removed plastic waste from the stadium.
“We call on plastic manufacturers to discontinue the production of thin-layer plastics,” said Patience Chipsagule, one of the co-founders of EarthCare.
“The accumulation of plastic waste in our soil reduces productivity, which is detrimental to us as an agro-based economy.”
She further emphasised that plastic pollution also negatively impacts the scenic beauty of the country, posing a threat to the tourism sector.
“By empowering youth with knowledge and skills in environmental stewardship, we are securing a better future for them,” explained Evelyn Siti, a mentor for EarthCare.
“This approach contributes to making the climate change we are all striving to combat a thing of the past.”
EarthCare was founded by three students and a teacher.
They participated in the "On Demand Youth Leadership Programme," sponsored by Legacy International.
The programme focused on climate adaptation and resilience.
The cleanup at Kamuzu Stadium is a sign of the commitment of young people in Malawi to environmental protection.
Their efforts to combat pollution and promote sustainable practises will help create a cleaner and healthier future.
