Dr. Jolly Maxwell Ntaba Elected as MCM’s New Board Chairperson
MCM is a media self-regulatory body that promotes ethical journalism through mediation and advocacy.
LILONGWE, Malawi - The Media Council of Malawi (MCM) has elected Dr. Jolly Maxwell Ntaba as its new board chairperson, the organization announced Friday, writes Staff Reporter.
Ntaba was elected at MCM's Elective General Assembly, the council's supreme decision-making body comprised of registered, paid-up members.
The election highlights the assembly's agenda to choose new board leadership and review organizational reports.
Ntaba is a veteran journalist and current lecturer of media studies at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences.
He also works as a media consultant.
The new chair takes over from Wisdom Nelson Chimgwede, who led MCM since its revival in 2020.
Ntaba now heads a board which includes representatives from media outlets, civil society groups and the government: Malawi Broadcasting Corporation, Times Media Group, Angaliba Radio & TV, Trans World Radio, Bembeke Community Radio, AfricaBrief Online, Directorate of Information (Ex-Officio), Public Affairs Committee, Malawi Law Society, and Council for Non-Governmental Organizations (CONGOMA).

It was established in 1995 but went dormant between 2010 and 2020.
The council aims to help the media overcome challenges and seize opportunities, according to MCM Executive Director Moses Kaufa.
He wished Ntaba success in "steering media self-regulation system that can overcome challenges and harness opportunities for the betterment of the media industry."
