DPP to Hold Convention, Mutharika Unopposed for Party Presidency
The convention follows the Malawi Congress Party's elective meeting, which concluded Aug. 10, as parties prepare for the 2025 elections.
BLANTYRE, Malawi— The opposition Democratic Progressive Party will hold its elective convention Aug. 17-19 at COMESA hall in Blantyre, with former President Peter Mutharika running unopposed for party leadership, writes Martin Kamlaike.
Convention chair George Chaponda told reporters Monday that all other positions are open for contestation.
"Malawi never experienced forex and fuel shortages under President Peter Mutharika," Chaponda said, praising the former leader's economic management.
Chaponda cited community colleges and road construction projects as key achievements prompting DPP members to endorse Mutharika as their candidate for the 2025 general elections.
The party expects over 2,600 delegates to attend, which Chaponda called "a sign that DPP is the only national party in this country."
Campaigning opened July 30 and closes Aug. 15 at 6 p.m. Chaponda urged candidates to focus on issues in their campaigns.
The DPP has invited other political parties, diplomats and development partners to the convention. Chaponda assured media coverage and security for attendees.
