DPP Names Chaponda Opposition Leader in MW Parliament
Political analysts view the shake-up as part of efforts to reorganize the DPP and reposition itself ahead of the next national polls in 2025.
LILONGWE, Malawi— The Democratic Progressive Party has announced new appointments to strengthen its parliamentary presence, naming George Chaponda MP as the new Leader of Opposition in the Malawi Parliament and Lonnie Chijere Chirwa MP as Commissioner, writes Ted Likombola.
The changes, which take effect immediately, were revealed in a statement by Shadrick Namalomba MP, the party's Presidential and Spokesperson.
"In a move aimed at strengthening its parliamentary presence, the DPP has appointed Hon. Chaponda as Leader of Opposition and Hon. Chirwa as Commissioner in Parliament," Namalomba said.
The party expressed gratitude to Hon. Mary Navicha MP, who previously served as DPP's Leader in Parliament.
"This development is expected to bring new energy and leadership to the DPP's parliamentary caucus as the party continues to play a vital role in shaping Malawi's political landscape," Namalomba added.
The appointments come as the former ruling party seeks to reinvigorate its opposition role following losses in the 2020 presidential election, which ushered in the Tonse Alliance administration.
