DOWA, Malawi — Youth parliamentarians in Malawi’s Dowa district are urging officials to address inadequate supplies of teaching and learning materials in local schools, writes Mphatso M’bang’ombe.
“The shortage of these materials do not only hampers the learning process but also demotivates both teachers and learners,” said 10-year-old Deputy Speaker Diana Mwaya during a two-day youth parliamentary session in Dowa.
Mwaya added that the scarcity promotes increased dropouts across the district. “By addressing this issue we can ensure that the younger generation is with necessary tools to succeed,” she said.
District Commissioner Stallich Mwambiya pledged to tackle the concerns, saying the government is committed to supportive learning environments.
“I fully support the efforts of the youth parliamentarians in addressing the shortage of teaching and learning materials,” Mwambiya said.
Mwambiya said his office will engage the central government to prioritize the matter and find lasting solutions.
