Support services and counselling are available for victims through local government and community support networks.
NENO, MALAWI — Domestic violence cases in Neno District have reached 414 in October, with women accounting for 286 of those incidents, local authorities reported Wednesday, coinciding with Malawi's 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, writes Chifundo Masauli.
Gertrude Mphande from the district office revealed that emotional abuse constitutes the majority of reported cases.
"We're urging people to speak out about violence before it escalates," Mphande said.
Paul Sosono, head of district social work, highlighted cultural barriers preventing male victims from reporting abuse.
"Many men remain silent due to shame, which perpetuates the cycle of violence," Sosono stated.
The national campaign emphasizes multiple awareness messages, including:
- "Everyone deserves safety and respect. Unite to end GBV."
- "Ending GBV starts with you. Act now."
- "Real strength is standing against violence."
Reporting channels include police stations, hospitals, workplace offices, and local court systems. Survivors are encouraged to seek support through multiple platforms.
The campaign focuses on key strategies:
- Empowering communities to prevent gender-based violence
- Supporting survivors
- Educating youth
- Challenging harmful cultural norms
- Advocating for stronger legal protections
Local leaders stress that addressing domestic violence requires collective community action and breaking the cultural silence surrounding abuse.
