DoDMA Introduces Lightning Detection System to Reduce Hazards in Malawi
DoDMA is also engaging chiefs, councils, and stakeholders on the system through awareness campaigns about lightning.
LILONGWE, MALAWI - The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) has sourced lightning detection system gadgets that will alert communities of impending lightning strikes, a development that is expected to reduce related hazards, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Chipiliro Khamula, spokesperson for the department, revealed on Tuesday that the system will produce alerts an hour before the occurrence of lightning.
“This is a modernized use of the climate early warning system and it is a new approach to assist in the avoidance of risks in Africa,” he said.
Khamula also mentioned that DoDMA is working closely with the Department of Meteorology and other stakeholders in disseminating information about lightning.
“The department came up with this system in order to reduce the risks of communities being struck by lightning,” he added.
According to Khamula, in the 2021/22 rainy season, 37 lives were lost due to lightning, while in 2022/23, a total of 39 people were killed by lightning in the country.
DoDMA is also engaging chiefs, councils, and stakeholders on the system through awareness campaigns about lightning.
“Lightning is a silent killer, hence the need to sensitize the people to be alert so that they can take appropriate preventive measures,” said the spokesperson.
