District Peace and Unity Committees Established to Promote Harmony and Conflict Resolution
The Malawian government establishes District Peace and Unity Committees to address conflicts and promote harmony in communities.
NSANJE, MALAWI — The Malawian government has initiated the establishment of District Peace and Unity Committees (DPUCs) in an effort to manage and analyse conflicts and promote harmony among communities, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
During a stakeholders meeting in Nsanje, Dr Elizabeth Gomani Chindebvu, Principal Secretary for the Local Government, Unity and Culture Ministry, announced that the formation of DPUCs has already been piloted in six districts, including Karonga, Nkhata Bay, Salima, Kasungu, Mangochi, and Mulanje.
"After the successful piloting of the DPUCs, we are now rolling out the programme in the three districts of Nsanje, Phalombe, and Machinga," Dr. Chindebvu stated.
She emphasised the importance of selecting committee members who will carry out their duties without political interference.
The committee will consist of 11 members, approved by the District Full Council Meeting before submission of their names to the ministry.
Enock Masauko Chizuzu, Parliamentarian for Nsanje North, expressed his satisfaction with the formation of the committee, highlighting its potential to address issues of division and promote unity among Malawians.
"We are all Malawians, and our differences in tribes and faiths should not be a barrier to tolerance," Chizuzu stated.
The DPUCs program is being funded by the Japanese government.
