LILONGWE, Malawi- Development Information Systems for Community Communication (DISCOM) has launched a career guidance initiative aimed at providing valuable guidance to secondary school students in Malawi, writes Judgement Katika.
The project, introduced by DISCOM Project Coordinator Stanley Mazani, addresses the high unemployment rate among young people in the country by helping them make informed decisions about their future careers.
During a career guidance talk at High Class Academy on Friday in Lilongwe, Mazani explained that the project was developed based on a comprehensive study conducted by DISCOM. The study revealed that many young people in Malawi remain unemployed due to a lack of career awareness and guidance.
Mazani stated, "We have initiated a program called vacation guidance counseling, which involves engaging with secondary school students directly to instill ambition and help them choose career paths that will lead to future progress."
Guest of Honor, Brigadier General Polycarp Boniface Zakaria Chilangwe from the Malawi Defence Force, emphasized the importance of discipline in career development. He highlighted the military's values and the role they play in fostering good discipline.
Chilangwe expressed, "Young people should be encouraged to acquire knowledge about how different institutions function. This will enable them to make informed decisions when selecting their career paths."
Richard Nyirenda, Managing Director of High Class Academy, praised DISCOM for its support in shaping students' mindsets and helping them identify their purpose in life and achievable goals. The program has significantly impacted the students' discipline and preparedness for future success.
DISCOM conducted an extensive study on career guidance throughout the entire country, with the initial implementation taking place in Lilongwe district. The project has gradually expanded from urban to rural areas of Lilongwe, reaching a total of fifteen secondary schools.
The positive outcomes achieved thus far have prompted DISCOM to consider scaling up the project to additional regions across Malawi.
By providing crucial career guidance to secondary school students, DISCOM aims to equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills for a successful and fulfilling future.
