CSOs Threaten Government with Nationwide Demonstrations Over Martha Chizuma Interdiction

Malawi: A joint coalition of civil society organizations (CSOs) has issued a warning to the government, threatening to hold nationwide demonstrations if President Chakwera fails to reinstate Martha Chizuma within ten days, writes Judgment Katika.
Boni Kalindo, a CSO activist, stated: "If the President does not restate Chizuma, we will mobilize Malawians to take to the streets all over the country to shut down Malawi. The Chizuma issue is completely ridiculous and we cannot sit back and watch this happen in a democratic governance disposition."
Redison Munlo, another activist, declared: "We will tell donors to stop supporting this country due to the increasing number of corruption cases. Chakwera should be removed from the presidency because he has failed to run the country and has destroyed it."
Munlo added: "We will continue to protect Chizuma's office and democracy, and ensure that the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) remains independent in this country."
The CSOs had planned to meet with members of parliament to present a petition over Chizuma's interdiction, but their request was blocked as the laws do not allow such meetings unless there is a special arrangement.
