CSAT, Media Discuss Transparency, Accountability
CSAT aims to promote good governance and collaborative engagement between citizens and duty bearers to enhance mutual accountability and transparency in using public resources.
LILONGWE, Malawi-- The Center for Social Accountability and Transparency engaged journalists from the Nyika Media Club on improving transparency and accountability in the country, writes Alinafe Sambo.
At an engagement dinner Thursday, CSAT Citizen Engagement Manager Moffat Mpweya Phiri said the meeting helped the organization realize the media cannot work alone on social accountability issues.
"As CSAT, we will be working hand in hand with the media to ensure that issues of social accountability and general governance are well-written and documented," Phiri said.
He added it's important for media and organizations to collaborate to improve transparency and accountability.
Nyika Media Club Chairperson Feston Malekezo said the engagement guided journalists on writing accountability stories.
However, he noted lack of resources hinders journalists from covering such stories.
"The media is sometimes limited in covering accountability stories because of financial issues," Malekezo said.
"We appeal to CSAT to assist these journalists in publishing their stories."
