Council Negligence Exposes Mzuzu Residents to Flooding Waters
The council says it will punish those who fail to comply with the city's building regulations.
MZUZU, Malawi-In a shocking display of negligence, the Mzuzu City Council's failure to properly maintain the drainage system around the Clock Tower Roundabout has led to severe flooding, causing significant inconvenience and potential hazards for residents and motorists, writes Tionge Hara.
The blocked drainage pipes have resulted in water pooling on the tarmac, turning the once bustling roundabout into a waterlogged mess.
"This is a disaster waiting to happen," said local resident Issa Phiri.
This alarming situation raises questions about the council's commitment to public safety and calls for urgent action to address the issue before it escalates further.
Speaking with AfricaBrief, council spokesperson MacDonald Gondwe apologized for the inconvenience caused, saying the problem originates from blocked storm drains which also affected the main outlet.
"Our team is working to clear the drains which will help address the flooding at the clocktower," Gondwe said.
Gondwe also mentioned that developers in the city must follow proper guidelines and not conceal waterways, which contributes to such problems.
