CouldYou? Vows to Support Women and Girls on International Day of the Girl Child
CouldYou? is on a mission to empower, educate, and change the world. Their goal is to end period poverty and make a lasting impact in the lives of girls and women everywhere.
LILONGWE, MALAWI - CouldYou? Malawi commemorates the International Day of the Girl Child by educating girls and women about the advantages of reusable menstrual cups and donating CouldYou? Cups to Malawian girls, writes Winston Mwale.
This initiative aims to empower the girl child and provide them with sustainable solutions for menstrual hygiene.
CouldYou? vows to support women and girls as the organization joins the world in celebrating the day.
Period poverty is a significant challenge in many parts of the world, forcing girls and women to miss school or work and resort to using unhygienic substitutes like rags or newspapers.
CouldYou? aims to address this issue by partnering with local NGOs, such as Malawi Girl Guides, to deliver menstrual health education and distribute the "CouldYou? Cup."
The "CouldYou? Cup" is a reusable menstrual cup made of 100% medical-grade silicone and is FDA-registered.
It provides a comfortable and environmentally friendly way for girls and women to manage their menstrual cycles. One cup can last up to 10 years and costs only $10 USD, making it an affordable and sustainable option for those in need.
The menstrual cup's environmental benefits are also significant. A year's supply of disposable pads or tampons for one person generates approximately 8.9 kilograms of CO2 emissions, equivalent to charging a mobile phone more than 1000 times.
In contrast, one menstrual cup saves 89 kilograms of CO2 emissions, equivalent to charging a mobile phone over 10,000 times.
"We are excited to have the CouldYou? menstrual cup available in Malawi. Our mission is to bring health equity and justice to our most vulnerable girls and women worldwide. The menstrual cup is here to make life easier for the girl child," said CouldYou? Malawi Program Director, Jones Mwalwanda.
